The New Leaf Scholarship Program
The centerpiece of the New Leaf Scholars Foundation is our Scholarship Program. This program is the tool we use to support our justice-impacted participants in their journey of recovery and education.
The Scholarship Program uses a two-pronged approach:
- Direct financial support by providing room, board, transportation and learning aids to participants. This support removes the burden of having to hold a job while going to college
- Recovery benchmarks such as 12 step meeting attendance, evidence of working a program, minimal GPA at school and random drug testing. Recovery from drug and alcohol addiction comes before education, because without recovery, education is not possible.
This model is currently being used in partnership with San Diego area treatment center The Fellowship Center (TFC). Graduates of TFC 90 day treatment program have been placed in on-campus housing with free rooms and meals provided, along with a personal computer and bus pass. All participants adhere to the previously mentioned benchmarks.
In 2025, the success rate (participants remained clean and sober and with passing grades in a full load schedule at Palomar Community College) was 80%.
The New Leaf Scholars Foundations goal is to try to replicate this success at other locations by following the winning formula used at TFC.
