My name is Oscar Bonilla. I was born in El Salvador and lived there until I was 10 years old. Growing up during a civil war shaped my childhood and taught me about fear, loss, and survival at a very young age.
When I came to the United States, I felt completely out of place. Without strong guidance or support, I spent much of my time on the streets, searching for safety, connection, and a sense of belonging.
As a teenager, I became involved in gangs and drug use while trying to fill that emptiness. By the age of 13, addiction had already taken hold of my life, and I eventually entered the California foster care system.
For many years, my life was stuck in a painful cycle of addiction, incarceration, and homelessness. There was a time when I had no desire to live and no belief that my life could ever be different.
At 44 years old, everything changed.
